چکیده

A dispersion of stiff and thin (‘rigid line’) inclusions (RLIs) in a matrix material may result beneficial for stiffening the elastic range, but might be detrimental to strength, as instabilities triggered by when is brought viscoplastic-damaging state. This dual role RLIs investigated means embedded reinforcement model. Validated against available analytical predictions, this numerical model employed assess roles RLIs’ orientation, interaction, volume fraction, distribution, considering up 1500 inclusions. When deforms inelastically, produce stress concentrations that promote nucleation shear bands. These are characterized at collapse many distributions RLIs, showing their effects range from almost negligible disrupting alteration dominant failure mechanism. In latter case, it shown bands can fragmented into mosaic tiny localization results offer new insights energy dissipation mechanisms reinforced materials, they promoted or inhibited interactions rigid line

Interaction of Cracks with Rigid Inclusions in Longitudinal Shear Deformation

The Interaction of a crack with rigid circular cylindrical inclusions is considered for the case of longitudinal shear deformation. General representations of the solutions for a radial crack near a single and midway between two inclusions are given. The particular case of uniform shearing stress applied at infinity is discussed in detail. Expressions for the crack tip stress intensity factor K...

Microstructural eects on shear instability and shear band spacing

A constitutive relation that accounts for the thermally activated dislocation motion and microstructure interaction is used to study the stability of a homogeneous solution of equations governing the simple shearing deformations of a thermoviscoplastic body. An instability criterion and an upper bound for the growth rate of the in®nitesimal deformations superimposed on the homogeneous solution ...

Shear dispersion

This review of shear dispersion emphasizes that the usual one-dimensional diffusion equation, derived by Taylor [ Proc. R. Sot. London Ser. A 219, 186 ( 1953) 1, is an asymptotic result that is valid only at large time. One route to earlier validity is a systematic wave-number expansion based on the center manifold theorem. This procedure captures much of the early behavior but it does discard ...

Instability Analysis and Free Volume Simulations of Shear Band Directions and Arrangements in Notched Metallic Glasses

As a commonly used method to enhance the ductility in bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), the introduction of geometric constraints blocks and confines the propagation of the shear bands, reduces the degree of plastic strain on each shear band so that the catastrophic failure is prevented or delayed, and promotes the formation of multiple shear bands. The clustering of multiple shear bands near notch...

Instability strain and shear band spacing in simple tensile/ compressive deformations of thermoviscoplastic materials

We analyze the stability of homogeneous simple tensile/compressive deformations of an isotropic heat-conducting thermoviscoplastic bar by studying the growth of infinitesimal perturbations superimposed upon a homogeneous deformation. The smallest axial strain at which the superimposed perturbation has a positive initial growth rate is called the instability strain. Two criteria are used to dete...
